Why UK Homeowners Are Actually Renovating
Before trends, it’s worth being honest about the reason most people start. Kitchen deterioration or dysfunction is the single biggest driver, cited by 37% of UK renovating homeowners — well ahead of personalising a newly bought home (32%) or simply having the budget to finally do it (29%). In other words, most renovations start because something has genuinely stopped working, not because of a passing trend.
1. Storage Has Become Near-Universal, Not Optional
Cabinet upgrades now appear in 98% of UK kitchen renovations, and 95% of those include specialty storage — cutlery organisers, pull-out recycling bins, and corner carousels among the most common. Beyond basic storage, 82% of homeowners are now adding dedicated built-in features: pantry cabinets (40%), full walk-in pantries (12%), or a butler’s pantry/prep kitchen (11%).
2. Colour Has Shifted Away From All-White and All-Grey
The all-white, all-handleless kitchen that dominated the last decade is losing ground. Blue is now the single most popular cabinet colour in UK renovations (18%), followed closely by green (17%) — both now ahead of neutral greys (12%) and off-whites (9%). Warmer, earthier palettes are consistently favoured over cold, clinical tones across current UK design coverage.
3. Kitchens Are Getting Bigger, Not Just Prettier
Just over half of renovating UK homeowners (51%) change the physical size of their kitchen during the project, with 23% enlarging it by more than 50% of its original footprint. Knocking through to create a kitchen-diner is consistently the single change most cited by buyers when UK properties go to market.
4. Planning for the Long Term, Not Just the Next Five Years
Over half of homeowners (55%) now design with current or future accessibility needs in mind — a figure that’s risen sharply year-on-year. This reflects a broader shift: UK homeowners are increasingly treating a kitchen renovation as a decades-long decision, not a five-year refresh.
5. Most Homeowners Bring In Professionals — And It Shows
90% of UK renovating homeowners hire professional tradespeople, with kitchen designers specifically engaged by 42%. The DIY-heavy approach of previous years has given way to homeowners wanting the design, plumbing, electrics, and fitting properly coordinated from the start.
What This Means If You’re Planning a Renovation
The data points to one consistent theme: UK homeowners in 2026 are prioritising kitchens that solve real, daily problems — storage, layout, longevity — over chasing a look that will date. Colour and finish choices matter, but they’re being layered onto decisions about function first.
